Radiant Floors

The design of the radiant floors had many challenges to solve.

First, we wanted natural wood flooring that was milled on the property and because we have a 200 year goal for the building, we wanted the wood boards thick enough to be able to sand them down and refinish them in the future.

Second, we did not want a pre-manufactured flooring material that contained glues or petrochemical products.

Third, we wanted to keep the temperature in the radiant floor tubing as low as possible, therefore we needed products that would enhance and hold the radiant heat as much as possible.

Styrofoam insulation under light weight concrete

The radiant tubing is going to be covered with a layer of Gyp Crete, light weight cement.  This will act as a thermal mass and protector of the radiant tubing.  Below is a brief product description from maxxon.com website.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
Maxxon's Therma-Floor® is a gypsum underlayment designed to pour over hot water tubes or electric heating cables. It acts as the thermal mass for any radiant floor. Therma-Floor encases the tubes or cables in crack resistant, noncombustible gypsum. Its special formula resists breakdown to 150ºF (66ºC). And because it's poured only 1-1/4" (32 mm) thick, the heating system is more responsive and more comfortable.
